What is a Domain?
A domain name is a unique name that identifies an internet resource such as a website. It is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control on the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name.
So basically, Domain Name is the address of your website on the Internet. If your website URL is http://www.example.com then example.com is your domain name.
What does Registering a Domain Name mean ?
You can register a domain name, if it is available, with an authorize domain name registrar. This means you are now assigned the domain name for a finite period and within that period, this name will not be allocated to anyone else without your consent. For the registration and use, you need to pay a fixed amount to the domain registrar annually.
What is a TLD ?
A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet. The top-level domain names are installed in the root zone of the name space. For example, if your website is http://www.example.com then .com is the TLD.

What TLD will be good for me ?
.com is a universal TLD and perhaps the most SEO friendly. After .com, the .net and .org TLDs are the most popular. As a norm .org domains are for non-profits and .net domains for Internet companies, however it is not mandatory. If you are a business, you can use a .biz TLD, and if educational institution then a .edu.
Country specific TLDs are also available. If your target audience is mostly from India, then you can consider having a .in TLD.
